Rich Lanier is the first person I ever saw dead. He died in Beth Israel Hospital: lung cancer; brain tumors; pneumonia. Suzanne was still alive, and we had heard he was heading toward the door. He left five minutes before we got there. He’d been the road manager for a famous rock band. The music was blaring and people were dancing in the hospital room. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. The body, so obviously a flesh garment cast off. I painted this from memory shortly thereafter. Needed to get it out of my head. I hope it gets into yours.
